Act Five: Cultivating a Discipleship Community in Hamilton, Ontario

Written by Moriah Vincent | Mar 27, 2024

We’re delighted to introduce you to Jon Berends, a Comment reader with a heart for young people, innovative education, and embodied community as central to Christian formation. Fuelled by these passions, Jon, who also has a background in high school education and a master’s in theological studies, launched Act Five. This budding discipleship community is based in Hamilton, Ontario, and offers gap-year and residency programs to young adults.

Act Five began in 2019 as a pilot program out of Redeemer University, seeking to redesign the gap-year experience for young adults who craved more than the traditional programs offered. Now operating independently, their mission is to empower young people to integrate their faith into all aspects of life—becoming “wholehearted, rooted, and alive,” as Jon describes it.

Act Five cultivates a hope-filled space for a diverse range of young adults, many arriving with questions around identity, purpose, and faith. Grounded in a rich theological imagination, Act Five embraces the beauty of ecumenism, welcoming those from various backgrounds to share a table. Young adults are invited to think critically about their faith, exploring the richness of the Christian story. This emphasis on hope is particularly resonant with participants, who are encouraged to develop a posture of listening and attention as they navigate the complexities of modern culture, rather than getting caught up in culture wars.

Instead of emphasizing entertainment and experiences, Act Five prioritizes building a translatable rule of life for young adults. Through deep formation and a diverse array of experiences, from exciting adventures to everyday chores, participants gain practical tools to integrate their faith into the very fabric of daily life. Regular rhythms of meals, chores, recreation, adventure, study, mentorship, prayer, and worship equip them for a life of faith that extends far beyond the program. This innovative approach to discipleship is a testament to the power of community and holistic faith formation. We are eager to see what the future holds for these young adults!
