We’re delighted to introduce you to a dear friend of Comment, Elizabeth Oldfield, who is one of our contributing editors, host of the award-winning podcast The Sacred, and now, the author of a book. Since May, she has been engaging audiences across the United Kingdom and North America with lessons learned from inhabiting a contemporary communal form of Christian humanism in her book, Fully Alive: Tending to the Soul in Turbulent Times.
Elizabeth has a knack for challenging conventional thinking. Fully Alive uses the seven deadly sins as a framework to show why, in a world often quick to judge, the concept of sin can be surprisingly liberating. Drawing on her Christian faith, Elizabeth shares the countercultural decisions she and a small band of housemates have made to sustain a life of love, offering a roadmap for readers hungry for deep connection, presence, and joy.
And she’s come to North America to share some of the lessons she’s been learning! From speaking at Aspen’s Philosophy & Society Initiative with fellow Comment contributors Samuel Kimbriel and David Brooks, to being interviewed by Anne in Washington, to sharing hope with Cardus’s NextGEN fellows in Canada, her insights on not just finding hope during chaotic times but also living it have resonated far and wide. Do check out her book and a new essay in the upcoming issue of Comment, “Soul Work for the End of the World.”
